MISSOURI CHAPTER OF US LACROSSE INDUCTS INAUGURAL CLASS INTO MISSOURI LACROSSE HALL OF FAME. ST. LOUIS, MO – Members of the inaugural "Class of 2005" were inducted into the Missouri Lacrosse Hall of Fame during ceremonies held Saturday evening, February 18, 2006 at the Anheuser-Busch Center. The first three members inducted were Mr. Bob Schulte, Coach Kathy Shortelle and Coach Mike Sennett.
The first person introduced was Mr. Robert N. Schulte. Over the years, Bob has been involved in every aspect and at all levels of the sport of lacrosse -- as a player, as a coach, as an official, as an administrator and as a parent. Just a few of the leadership roles Bob has taken on include: former Head Coach of Ladue High School; St. Louis Lacrosse Foundation Chapter President and long-time Board Member; President of the Mid-American Lacrosse Officials Association (MALOA) and veteran high school and college lacrosse official; Certified US Lacrosse National Clinician and Official's Trainer; District 7 Governor & Men's Division Officials Council Board of Directors. Bob currently serves on the US Lacrosse National Board of Directors. Among the proudest accomplishments for the development of lacrosse in Missouri and throughout the Mid-West, Bob was a driving force behind bringing the I.A. College Club National Championships to St. Louis for seven consecutive years. The second selection inducted into the Missouri Lacrosse Hall of Fame was Ms. Kathy Shortelle. "Shorty", as she is known in the lacrosse community, started her coaching career as head coach at Westminster school in Simsbury, Connecticut during the late 1970's. After several teaching and coaching positions at schools along the east coast, Shorty moved to St. Louis in 1990 to become the athletic director at Mary Institute. Soon after arriving at the all-girl school, Shorty saw an opportunity for lacrosse. In 1990, Coach Shortelle started a girls high school club team at the school. During the early 1990's Kathy worked with athletic directors at numerous schools throughout the St. Louis area to start girls high school teams. Coach Shortelle's efforts led to the establishment of a strong foundation for girls high school and women's lacrosse in the State of Missouri. A winner of three state championships, Shorty's record as a head coach in Missouri is a remarkable 77-4-3. Throughout the years Coach Shortelle's goal has been to "instill a love for the game that will last a lifetime" among her players. Kathy recently moved to Vero Beach, Florida where she has assumed head coaching duties at St. Edward's High School. The final person inducted into the inaugural class of the Missouri Lacrosse Hall of Fame was Mr. Michael P. Sennett. Mike, a native of Detroit, Michigan, played his high school ball at Brother Rice. He went on to play college lacrosse at the University of Notre Dame where he was a three-time monogram winner at attack and served as Team Captain for the Fighting Irish in 1991. Mike moved to the St. Louis area immediately after graduation and upon his arrival founded the lacrosse program at DeSmet Jesuit High School. Coach Sennett has been the Head Coach at DeSmet ever since where he has compiled at record of 141 wins and 38 losses in Missouri and coached a record six Missouri High School State Championship Teams. Eleven of Coach Sennett's players have been named High School All-Americans. Seven have been honored as Academic All-Americans. 36 of his players have gone on to play lacrosse at the NCAA level. Over the years Mike has led many efforts to develop the skills and talents of people interested in lacrosse as players and as young men. Along with Coach Kevin Corrigan, the Head Coach of Notre Dame, Mike started the annual Irish Lacrosse Camp in 1995. He helped create the high school boys team that travels to the Vail Shootout to represent Missouri every year. He was selected to coach the West Team in the 2004 National Senior Showcase. He is the founder and tournament director for the ATG SuperTurf Fall Face-Off. Year after year, his efforts bring national recognition to the Missouri lacrosse community. With his long list of accomplishments, what makes Coach Sennett most proud, is that over 30 of his former players, upon graduation from college, have returned home to coach lacrosse at the youth and high school levels. The three individuals selected to enter the Missouri Lacrosse Hall of Fame Class of 2005 are recognized for their long-standing service and commitment to the growth and development of lacrosse in Missouri. Their efforts have inspired greater participation in lacrosse and have built an appreciation for the history of the sport while preserving the integrity of the game. |
